The lifestyle is very demanding- but another challenge facing the Sámi people is whether young people will be tempted to turn their backs on a traditional lifestyle, in favor of a modern European life.

May-Torill explains that joiks, heard at the beginning of the Outlook interview, are traditional Sámi songs. They are sung in honor of someone or something. For example families will make a new joik if a new child is born; you can also joik a reindeer or a mountain. It is important that you don't have the same joik as another family.
Elle says she likes to joik as she is traveling - but she has to make sure that she doesn't travel too fast.
The clothes Elle and May-Torill wear are traditional Sámi costumes. May-Torill explains that she wears her outfit on special occasions.
It takes many hours to make clothes. May-Torill says that the Sámi people love bright and colorful outfits.
When out trekking - Elle says she wears some modern skiing gear and but also traditional reindeer coats - which are very warm.
When asked about the future, and keeping young people within communities, May Torill says that there are some young people who want to stay herding reindeer but it won't be possible for all the young people. May-Torill hopes that young people will get an education and then return to live within Sámi communities.
Elle says it's a hard life and not a job with regular hours- but she would consider being a herder. Other jobs Elle would consider include working with children, but she hasn't decided what she wants to do in the future.
