Sony halts production of the cassette Walkman in Japan

Sony Walkman TPS-L2

More than 220 million cassette Walkmans were sold

The iconic portable cassette tape player, the Sony Walkman, is ceasing production in Japan.

Released in 1979, they were popular with commuters, joggers and teenagers, but they were also an irritant to many, who found the tinny noise from the headphones of others annoying.

CD and MP3 versions of the Walkman will remain in production.

The World Today's Tom Hagler took the streets of London with a Walkman and asked people whether they recognised it.
