On the couch with Sigmund Freud in China

Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) the neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis.

Freud is regarded as one of the most influential minds of the 20th century

As the Chinese government relaxes restrictions on mental health treatment, China is starting to develop a market for long-term psychoanalytical therapy.

In the West, Freud has been falling out of favour for a while, but in China a growing number of Chinese psychoanalysts are adopting Freudian techniques.

For the past two years, therapists from the China American Psychoanalytic Alliance have been teaching the fundamentals of Freud to counterparts on the other side of the world, via the internet.

Dr Ji Xuesong is a psychoanalyst at the Mental Health Institute of Peking University.
