Condoleezza Rice (L) and Aretha Franklin

Ms Rice played some classical pieces before accompanying Ms Franklin

The former US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, and the soul singer, Aretha Franklin have taken to the stage in an unusual duet at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia.

The aim of the collaboration was to raise money for underprivileged city children and awareness for music and the arts.

The BBC's Max Pearson asked Peter Crimmins of radio WHYY Philidelphia how the collaboration had come about.
