Lufthansa pilots' strike grounds thousands of flights

Lufthansa pilots take part in a strike at Frankfurt am Main airport, 22 February 2010

Thousands of flights have been cancelled at Germany's main airports on the first day of a four-day strike by Lufthansa pilots.

Attempts at last-minute negotiations between the pilots' union and Lufthansa management, mediated by the government, failed at the weekend.

The dispute centres on the transfer of jobs to foreign subsidiaries of Lufthansa to cut costs.

The head of media relations at Lufthansa is Andreas Bartels.
