The case of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old Nigerian charged with attempting to blow up a plane travelling from Amsterdam to Detroit on 25 December, has raised many questions.

Where and how did he become radicalised and trained to the point where he very nearly managed to set off explosives hidden in his trousers?

And how did a person who was on an American watch-list manage to slip through the many nets which should have been in place to catch him?

But it is in Nigeria, where he was born to a wealthy family, that the Abdulmutallab story begins.

Airline travellers are again having to get used to new restrictions, from pat downs at airports to a ban on blankets in the approach to landing.

The targeted plane, Northwest Airlines flight 253, departed from Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

The Dutch Airline Pilots' Association has called for speedy introduction of all new technologies available for security checks at airports, including full body scan machines.
