Gareth Thomas, a Welsh rugby player who has captained both Wales and the British and Irish Lions, has come out as gay.

He says he decided to talk openly about his sexuality because he could no longer live a lie.

He tells the BBC's Robin Lustig that he hopes the revelation that he is gay will help break down stereotypes within sport.

First broadcast 22 December 2009
