Does Hollywood encourage violence against women?

The Australian actress Nicole Kidman has spoken to a US Congress foreign affairs subcommittee in her capacity as a goodwill ambassador for the UN Development Fund for Women.

The committee was discussing what it could do to confront violence against women overseas.

Republican representative Dana Rohrabacher took the chance to ask whether Hollywood "played a bad role" in the way it portrayed women.

So, is there a problem with the way Hollywood depicts sexual violence concerning women?

The BBC's Owen Bennett-Jones spoke to stand up comedian and actress Siddiqua Akhtar, and first the women's rights campaigner Julie Bindel.
