In Gaza the obstacles to education are very visible.
The Israeli offensive against Hamas there earlier this year left many buildings destroyed and damaged. The Palestinian authorities say more than 400 children were killed in the attacks.
Many children have now gone back to school, despite the trauma, the unexploded ordinance and numerous other physical obstacles. However, at school, there's a shortage of basic supplies: textbooks, ink and paper.
Katya Adler has been talking to one family in Gaza about the problems they face as they try to get their children an education.
