Most people can picture the dollar, pound or the euro symbol - but what about the Indian rupee?

That is harder because it does not have one - you just put an 'Rs' for rupees alongside a currency amount, and India wants to change that.
India's government has launched a public contest for the design of a new symbol, which in the words of the finance ministry statement, will be "the identity of the Indian currency".
Typeface designer Erik Spiekermann explains why the idea may be difficult to put in practice:
