The Skycar flying over a beach

It must cross the Channel and the Straits of Gibraltar

Ever since the earliest days of science fiction, designers have dreamed of a flying car.

There have been various attempts to create such a vehicle, with virtually all of them ending up simply as contraptions of curiosity.

But a team of adventurers has set off on a journey from London to Timbuktu in Mali in a flying car that works.

Led by pilot Neil Laughton, the team is making the 5,800-kilometre trip in a Parajet Skycar - a dune buggy with a fan and paragliding wing.

The Skycar and support team began their epic journey in London's Knightsbridge.
