Can a toddler be an artist?

A young Australian artist is causing a bit of a stir.

Her work, splashes of oil on canvas, are on display in a gallery in Melbourne. One critic described them as 'credible abstractions playing on Asian screens'.

Her name is Aelita Andre and she's young. Very young.

Her best work was done when she was 20 months old and today, Aelita has been celebrating her second birthday.

Her mother, Nikka Kalashnikova, and father, Michael Andre, rather liked her work and showed it to the gallery owner, but somehow forgot to mention the artist was just a toddler.

Her parents spoke to Newshour's Mike Williams:
