Harold Pinter

His writing was among the most influential of the 20th century

The British playwright, actor and director, Harold Pinter has died.

He also wrote screenplays, poetry and essays, which increasingly combined his writing with political activism.

Harold Pinter was an outspoken critic of the Iraq war and what he called American imperialism.

Three years ago he announced publicly that he would stop writing plays to dedicate himself to political activism.

In October 2005 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
