For many the trauma of caused psychological difficulties
Ninety years ago today, after four years of carnage and destruction the First World War came to an end.
The conflict and particularly the horrors of trench warfare came to symbolise for a whole generation the futility of mechanised warfare.
But for many of those who survived, the mental suffering continued throughout their lives.
But can war trauma be passed down the generations? Well, families are now coming forward who say that it can, and that the impact of past conflicts is still being felt by countless children and grandchildren today.
The BBC's Rob Broomby reports on what is now being called the intergenerational transfer of war trauma.
First broadcast 11 November 2008
