The Georgian town of Gori was hit by Russian air strikes
When fighting erupted in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia in August the United States, Britain, and other Western nations were swift to condemn Russia's military intervention.
Russia said it became involved to protect South Ossetian civilians from an attack by Georgia's army.
The BBC's Tim Whewell has gained rare and unsupervised access to South Ossetia to try and unravel who started the shooting and when exactly the Russians did march into Georgia.
