Tension between Russia and Georgia goes back years
After days of fierce fighting and intense diplomacy, Russia and Georgia have agreed an outline plan to end hostilities.
On Saturday, Newshour brought together a panel of experts to discuss the background to the conflict and look at what the consequences might be for Georgia, Russia and the wider region.
The panel comprised Rachel Clogg, Caucasus programme director at the non-governmental organisation Conciliation Resources, Roy Allison, reader in international relations at the London School of Economics, and Georgian Political analyst Gyorgy Kareshvili.
Newshour's Julian Marshall began by asking Rachel Clogg what the origins of the conflict were?
