Using apes in circuses will be banned under proposed laws

Should animals be given legal rights? Spain's parliament thinks so.

It has voiced support for a proposal which would grant great apes the right to life, freedom and protection from torture.

If the resolution becomes law, it would be the first case of a country awarding legal rights to non-humans.

Michelle Stumpe, of the Great Ape Project, has been campaigning for a United Nations Declaration of Rights for Great Apes.
