Memories of Manhattan | |||||||||||||
Age is no barrier in the world of music, and veteran South African musician, Joe Mogotsi of the Manhattan Brothers, superstars of the township music scene in the fifties, is on the road and proving it. Eighty-two year old Joe has brought out a new album celebrating that early musical heritage and he and his re-formed Manhattan Brothers are currently in South Africa to promote it. It's called 'Inyembezi' - which means "tears" - because it is also mourning the forgotten past and how the history of those days has been lost. Shen Liknaitzky met Joe and asked him for his recollections of his days at the forefront of the fifties 'Golden Age' of music. Her report begins with a young reporter of the time, Arthur Maimane recounting how South African culture was in the thrall of the Manhattan Brothers. | LOCAL LINKS Scream out loud17 November, 2006 | News Desert rebel30 October, 2006 | News New Prince of Afrobeat07 September, 2006 | News 'Tuku' - in a class of his own21 August, 2006 | News Cesaria Evora drinks the honey12 July, 2006 | News Africa singing out26 June, 2006 | News EXTERNAL LINKS The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites | |||||||||||||
