Rachid Taha, a naturalised Frenchman born in Algeria, has been creating African rock sound clashes since the early eighties, taking on board rock, punk, trance, rap and techno music. Rejecting the narrowness and limiting nature of musical labels, Taha's work is a melting pot of ideas drawn from his European home and his African roots. This month sees the welcome release of a new album from this 'Grandfather of African rock', Diwan 2, this time its sound is rooted in Algeria. It picks up where his 1998 album Diwân left off, moving away from the guitar-rock sound and embracing the more traditional Oran and Raï musical styles and using Arabic instruments. When he visited Bush House, Bola Mosuro asked Rachid Taha if he agreed this new work is a change of direction? | LOCAL LINKS New Prince of Afrobeat07 September, 2006 | News 'Tuku' - in a class of his own21 August, 2006 | News Cesaria Evora drinks the honey12 July, 2006 | News Africa singing out26 June, 2006 | News EXTERNAL LINKS The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites | |||||||||||||
