'Tuku' - in a class of his own
Oliver Mtukudzi's talent is so refined and so distinctive that he even has his own musical genre - 'Tuku' music. The guitar great from Zimbabwe graced the Network Africa office recently, and bowled us over with the soul-filled music that he has at his fingertips. Famously reluctant to live outside of Zimbabwe, he was visiting London at the start of a three date UK tour. Life in Zimbabwe Mtukudzi sings in English and in Shona; he doesn't shy from difficult subjects and his songs often cover social and economic issues that affect the daily lives of Zimbabweans. It is not a preachy style, his lyrics embrace humour and optimism, garnering enthusiastic plaudits from wide and diverse audiences. Paul Bakibinga was lucky enough to sit opposite him in the Bush House studio, he began by asking how the difficult economic and political situation in Zimbabwe affected him as a musician? | LOCAL LINKS Cesaria Evora drinks the honey12 July, 2006 | News Africa singing out26 June, 2006 | News Bonga: Made in Angola30 May, 2006 | News Tiken Jah Fakoly's angry "Outburst"15 May, 2006 | News The Queens reign supreme08 May, 2006 | News Ambassador Angélique 02 May, 2006 | News The make up of Maurice el Medioni19 March, 2006 | News EXTERNAL LINKS The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites
