The Queens reign supreme | |||||||||||||||||||||
Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesotho Mbadu and Mildred Mangxola are three South African women who've helped export their country's music far beyond its natural borders. They make up the Mahotella Queens who, along with their former lead vocalist, Simon Mahlathini Nkabinde, made their unique acapella sound famous. In the 1960s, as Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, they toured beer halls in the townships which earned their style of music the title 'the indestructible sound of Soweto'. Sadly in 1999 Mahlatini passed away, but the Mahotella Queens are still going strong; they've since brought out three albums of their own, the latest being "Reign and Shine". The Queens paid us a visit and performed new album track Amabhongo live in the studio. Band member and spokesperson, Hilda Tloubatla chatted with Bola Mosuro, she began by explaining how the title of the new CD came about. |
