Passion and precision - contemporary dancers

May 2007

In May 2007, we brought you the following features:

Sharjah Biennial

The Sharjah Art Biennial in the United Arab Emirates is the largest art event in the Arab world and this year's theme is 'The Environment'. We find out how the biennial fits in with the fact that the United Arab Emirates is one of the most rapidly developing man-made environments in the world. Just think of all those gleaming rows of newly-built hotels and skyscrappers in the city of Dubai, for example.

Julie Christie

Julie Christie is famous for her roles in films like Dr Zhivago and Don't Look Now, made back in the 1960s and 1970s. Now, this beautiful British screen icon is back, starring in a new film, Away From Her, which looks set to win awards. Julie Christie talks to us about her fame and good fortune.

Sacred Monsters

In this edition, we step into the dynamic world of contemporary dance! We hear parts of an interview with two of the world's leading dancers - Sylvie Guillem, who trained as a classical ballet dancer and Akram Khan, who's trained in the North Indian Kathak style of dancing. Sylvie and Akram talk about dancing together in a new show called Sacred Monsters and we find out how they got along!

The Painted Veil

In this programme, we listen to a review of a new Hollywood film, The Painted Veil, which stars Naomi Watts and Edward Norton. Plus, we find out how the film is different from the classic English novel on which it's based.

Pop Stars - the new fashion designers

Why are pop stars the new fashion designers? Lisa Armstrong, fashion editor of the Times, explains why she thinks so many stars are now launching their own clothing brands.
