THIS WEEK'S "SONGLINES" The original members of the band met at school in Dublin, Ireland. The band was called Juniper at the time and their speciality was to play other people's songs at weddings, 21st birthday parties, etc.

It was 2001 before they began to write songs for their first album "Music in the Mouth" - but they missed playing at weddings etc. Hey, who am I fooling?!

THE PHRASE: 'Who am I fooling?'

'Who am I fooling?' means 'who am I deceiving but without success?'. And that's something you might say if you've been pretending to do something or pretending to be someone without much success.

From BBC Learning English:

The Flatmates
Is Helen really fooling Tim about the identity of their landlord?

BBC Cornwall
Since May of this year, I've changed my mind about the AS subjects I wanted to take roughly five times. Or exactly five times, who am I trying to fool?

I think young people who are irritated by these comments are fooling themselves...

THE BAND: Bell X1

Made up of Paul, Brian, Dom and Damien - Bell X1 and their music are full of all the charm we expect from the Irish. They play several instruments very well so even though their sound is familiar to us (they've been compared to Radiohead), it's also different and interesting. Bell X1 writes songs that are a little bit longer than most pop bands' - but they're well worth the extra time!
