Bush President Bush has renewed his commitment to the war on terror. In a nationwide address to the American people he said that the US will not leave Iraq until its work is done, but it will all cost nearly ninety billion dollars. This report from Michael Buchanan.

President Bush used this speech just days before the second anniversary of the September the eleventh attacks to cast the conflict in Iraq into the broader context of the war on terrorism.

He said the United States was helping the long-suffering people of Iraq to build a democratic society because, he went on, everywhere that freedom takes hold, terror will retreat. Mr Bush acknowledged the problems the US has faced. A collection of killers, he said, are trying to force America to leave Iraq early. He vowed they wouldn't succeed.

Mr Bush said he will ask Congress for eighty-seven billion dollars for the on-going efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, three-quarters of which will be spent on the needs of the military.

Little wonder perhaps that the President made a direct appeal for help from the international community. He said US military commanders had requested a multi-national division of troops to serve in Iraq and he urged the UN Security Council to respond positively.
