Mason:
President Musharraf's support for United States military action in Afghanistan and its war on terrorism angered a big chunk of Pakistani opinion. Anti-American feeling partly explains the electoral success of radical Islamic parties. After his talks with Tony Blair, I asked General Musharraf how much of a problem that was for his relations with the United States. He said the Pakistan government was taking action against all forms of religious extremism:
Musharraf:
'This has three forms. Al Qaeda, the Taleban, and our own religious extremists and militants. We are operating against all three, and we are meeting great success in all that.'
Mason:
General Musharraf said he was sure the United States and Britain appreciated that. His declared aim on this tour is to build a long-term strategic relationship with the Americans and the big European powers. But another difficulty in the way is Pakistan's long-running dispute with India over Kashmir. Moves a month or two ago to improve relations haven't got very far. General Musharraf was asked about a Russian call for action to stop incursions into India-administered Kashmir from the Pakistani side. He replied that there was nothing happening across the line of control at all, and - contrary to what the Indians kept saying - the rebellion against Indian rule was a local matter.
