Divisions in NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) over Iraq

Another casualty of the Iraqi crisis: NATO's political credibility is now on the line. The United States asked the alliance last month for various kinds of support in the event of a war against Iraq. But NATO can't agree on what to do. A proposal put forward by alliance officials includes the deployment of Patriot anti-missile batteries and AWACS surveillance planes to help defend Turkey from any possible military response from Iraq. But both France and Belgium have objected. Even beginning military planning, they argue, would imply that diplomatic efforts to disarm Iraq have already failed.
