Who is Inspector Morse?
Inspector Morse is a detective based in Oxford. He’s the creation of Colin Dexter and based partly on Colin Dexter himself, partly on Sherlock Holmes. He’s a literary, cultured detective who loves the music of Wagner, he loves crosswords and he’s quite quirky, very insistent ...(1)... correct grammar, rather hard on his sergeant but at the same time he has a kindly streak in him and is very attractive to women and has a very unusual approach to solving his problems, tending to look at classical mythology rather than the more obvious police methods ...(2)... today.

Morse actually studied ...(3)... Oxford, at St John’s college, he studied for two years only and then left after an unhappy love affair so like many of the gentleman of the 19th Century he in fact left without taking a degree and Sherlock Holmes on whom he’s partially based is also supposed to have studied at Oxford, possibly also at St John’s College. But having left and given ...(4)... his studies he went into the local police force and has risen to the rank of Chief Inspector.

Why is Morse so popular?
The character created ...(7)... John Thaw is slightly different ...(8)... the Morse in the books who is a rather curmudgeonly character, but John Thaw, has over the years that he has been filming this character really injected something of his own personality and creation into Morse which is more attractive than the man in the stories and he is a popular actor anyway, he’s been voted the best looking man in Britain. John Thaw - courtesy of Carlton TVHe has just become very popular with the viewers, particularly American viewers - there’s a very large Morse fan club in the states.

This interview was recorded before the sad death of John Thaw in February 2002.
