Watermelons:a good harvest & a low price

JENNY FROM CHINA BLOGGED IN AUGUST

In Xi'an, china, where I live, the cheapest fruit in this summer is watermelon.

There are some highlands in our provinces where the day is warm and the night is cool. This weather really benefits for watermelons, because sugar can be concentrated in the fruit. So they taste really sweet!

Farmers in our provinces had got the biggest harvest among recent years and the watermelon's price decreased down to the history record. Government encouraged people to eat more watermelons and it already gave farmers some subsidies. However the problems are still serious. Our local newspaper said a woman farmer had taken suicide. She lived in another province where there is also a big watermelon harvest. She didn't want to see her watermelons would rot on her field.

On the early morning many farmers came to our street to sell their farm products. They often come back home at noon. The watermelon costs Chinese Yuan 0.4~0.6 per kilogram. It equals to British Pound 0.03~0.05 per kilogram. In addition, it is a retail price instead of a wholesale price.

We can not eat more so we make watermelon juice. One of my western friends does this, and so do I.

thanks to lewis' advice, I have made a improved version. I keep the old one, so we can compare the 2 versions.

Priceless fruits

JENNY FROM CHINA BLOGGED IN AUGUST

Early in this morning I met a neighbor who lives on ground floor. She sent me some figs. They were ripe naturally and tasted soft and a little sweet. I had not eaten fresh figs until I moved to this neighborhood 2 years ago. In our city in marker there are only dried rips imported from Thailand.

Our community is really small. It has 3 buildings which is 6-floor high including ground floor. It is in a middle school's campus. Since my child entered this school, I have rent a flat here. It is a quiet and safe place. It is far from main streets and takes 10~15 minutes to the nearest bus station. It is so convenient to live that you can buy vegetables even in 8 o'clock on the streets.

People love gardening here, although the land is limited. They water planes in the morning, pull out grass, sweep the felled overripe fruits. In autumn they shear the trees. The fig tree is 16 years old. Its owner found it on the way home. A person abandoned it on the side of the road. It was small but had roots. So she picked it up on her bike and raised it near her window. She takes care of it carefully and shares the fruit with all the people passing by every year. There are also a peach tree, a persimmon tree, a walnut tree, a Sichuan pepper ( Zanthoxylum )tree, 2 megranate trees and some herbage plants such as red peppers , pumpkins, and some flowers. You can see some in my photos.

When my daughter finishes her school, we may leave here. So I write this blog to keep the sweet memory.

Hi Lewis,

Thank you very very much. I read your second blog during the day but I could not respond at that time. At night my child was playing on our compute. So I had to sleep first and then get up to blog. (I am exhausted now ) I have just read your third blog. It is so impressed.

Thank you for putting your feet into my shoes!
I appreciate you more than I can say!
Goodbye!

Cindy

JENNY FROM CHINA BLOGGED IN AUGUST

Today is just a normal day. Meg---my daughter had been playing on computer all the day. She know I have to write my blog, but she could not bear to leave the computer. She felt ashamed in the afternoon, so she promised to make a nice picture for me. Here it is.

Now she is in her room. I am drinking a big cup of lemon tea and thinking what to say.
Ok, I'd like to be a story teller and tell you the story of Cindy..

Cindy was my classmate from primary school to high school. We also lived in the same community. Her father was a driver. He drove the beautiful cars for some high ranking leaders. In my memory he was the most handsome man I have ever seen. Her mother was a professor. She taught French in a university. Our primary school is in this university's campus.

Since she was a child, Cindy was beautiful and had a lot of nice dress. She often ate chocolate and other exotic candy. There are no such products in our local market at that time. But her father had the way to get them. Maybe for this reason, Cindy looked as a girl when we all looked like children.

But things changed in her middle school. Cindy's mom was got a chance to study in French. She soon cohabited with the Frenchman who helped her to do abroad. He had taught in her university in china. Then Cindy's parents divorced. Cindy and her dad lived in China. Her mom married with that man and stayed abroad. Cindy's life became disorder. She was often in dresses that were too small. She began to eat in the eating place where usually only college students went. Her father's eyes looked really sad, although he tried to date with other women.

Cindy's mom took her to American when she had just graduated from high school. Her step father is not a bad guy. He supported her finish her university in American. To us surprise, Cindy came back after her graduation. She did different jobs in a big city of china. Then her farther retired, but he was still single. His eyes were still sad.

Cindy married very late. The couples live in the city she works. She has
two children up to now. Her father married at last. Cindy sent a nice car to him, since her husband's business run good. It is the first time he drives his own car.

I met Cindy's dad recently. He was fat and not handsome anymore. But the sadness in his eyes disappeared.

Cooper &Sandra

Today my husband and I ate diner out with our friends. We took some sale-out food to my child. On my way home I was worrying if Meg had been playing on the computer whole day. Recently she loves making animation and processing pictures. Although l like all the pictures she made for my blog, I still hope she could play less. Fortunately, she even didn't touch it today. Once she was addictive to play on-line computer game and her grades fell to the lowest on record. She was so upset that she deleted all her favorite games from our computer. Then she worked hard for whole semester and got some reward. However she was totally relaxed in these holidays. She played and slept too much that she may not able to complete her summer holidays' homework. I don't want to save my rod but she is 12. Is too old to be beaten, isn't?

Tomorrow we will have an English corner host by Cooper. You can see him on the photo. He looks like Machel.Jordan does he? Every one says that. He comes from UK. His parents emigrated to UK from Uganda. He gives us a printed article each time. It contents widely different topics. I have got lots of sheets. I filed them into my binder. It is easy to review them. They are really helpful!

Sandra, Cooper's girlfriend has just come to china the day before yesterday. She looks fashionable and really healthy. To welcome her Cooper spent all day cleaning the room. Cooper bought a blender recently. I am sure he is going to make her watermelon juice! Cooper did not cook a lot before she comes, but life may change because she may miss her mom's kitchen, and certainly Cooper will have great willing to cook for her.

Here is a link about a telephone interview of me.
Jenny's telephone interview

You can hear my voice. Meg, my child said my voice sounded like a stranger, since I made my tone higher than usual. I have not listened yet causing my speakers are in Meg's bedroom. I can not get them out now.

Jane's curse---part1

This is me---jenny! the photo is processed as be tored. It is made by Meg

When Jane was 30 years old, she lost her job. Jane and her husband had worked in a factory together for some years. Later the business hadn't been going well and the boss fired many workers including Jane. One of Jane's friends suggested her to print name cards. It doesn’t need to invest lots of money and the small machine is easy to operate.

Thus Jane began to work for herself. She borrowed some money from her friends and bought a small printing machine. She let other shops to tape the films and then printed the cards by herself. She could also print some other things but her business was bad. Thanks to the job that her husband had the couples could still lived on. Her friend told her to publish some advertising on their local newspapers. However, it needed some more money. The debt had not paid back yet but Jane decided to borrow some more money for advertising.

It was a gambling and Jane won. Her business got better and she rent 3 rooms. Her husband also helped her after his work and slept here to guard the workshop. After 2 year Jane's 7-days-a-week schedule had paid off. She paid all the money and interests back to her friends.

After a while the photo shop Jane used to tape the film bankrupted. One day Jane met the girl who once worked in the shop. She said she now had no job. So Jane spent all her saving to buy a latest computer and let the girl work for her. She suggested Jane to buy a special soft, that has a wide variety of new letter styles. And Jane did so.

This soft made Jane's shop better than her competitors. They became too busy. So Jane hired 2 boys. One of them hadn't finished his college. He wanted to sleep in the working place so he could save some spending. He also asked for breaks if he needs to pass tests. After some days working together Jane agreed his requirements, since he was really clever and dedicated.

Several months passed. Jane felt confident now. a person who sold her ink told her there would be a meeting in Guilin, where is the most beautiful place in china. A lot of ink companies will go there and give some lectures about new ink techniques.

Jane and her husband were raring to go there. They didn't travel in their honeymoon. Luckily they had earned some money. It was enough to go.

Jane didn't know, after this journey her life could change out of blue.

The story is unfinished and it will be continued in my next blog.

Jane's curse---part2

Guilin was a such wonderful place that Jane hoped to live there for one or a half year in the future when she becomes richer. The small town is like a park. There are rives, lakes and mountains everywhere. There is flower's smell in the air. The meeting was good. Jane planed to try a new tech when she comes back.

She even found the love came back to them. During these years concentrating on hard-working, Jane had never thought whether her husband and she had still loved each other. But now they were dreaming of owing a small house with a lovely garden. They will become green fingers working in the garden and will be surrounded by a cat, a dog and a child.

However, the photo call from Jane's brother in low woke up their dream. Before their travel, they asked him to sleep in the workshop to guard the little manufactory. But now he told them that the computer was stolen yesterday in the evening. He had a good sleep and did not hear anything.

Jane's were dashing to the train station. After 20 hours, they came back. The policemen had arrived but hadn't found any clue. Their helpers---two boys and one girl wanted their wages and they didn't want to work here anymore. Jane said it was not the time to pay wages. But they all had good excuses. Jane required them to stay and help her to overcome the hurdlers. But they all refused.

Then Jane's life seemed return to the start. She printed by herself and her husband helped her. She felt confused why God had treated her like that! She also didn't understand how thieves can know that there is an expansive computer in a such small and unnoted place.

It is a small town. After a half year Jane knew her 3 ex-workers had began the same business as hers. The girl married with Sean, who once was a student. Jane regretted that she so patiently taught them the method which she herself paid tuition and learned from the printing training school. She paid them wages and taught them craft free but now they grew up as her competitors.

One day Jane's husband told her when he delivered the goods to their client he found Sean also offered goods to this client. The letter style on their goods is the rare one, just as same as Jane's. Jane knew the company had only sold this letter style to her in this town. So Jane called that company and the company told her that they hadn't sold this letter style to others. Hence Jane was sure the young guys had stolen her computer.

The policemen soon caught them and gave the computer back to Jane. The detectives told Jane Sean admitted he committed the crime himself. So the other two were innocent.

Jane was happy to see the computer coming back. It was the most expensive thing she had ever had at that time. And it was all made by her sweat.

Several months passed Jane met Sean near her another client's office. Jane wondered why he can come out of jail so soon. According to the low he at least should stay in jail for 2 years. He must done something secretly. Later Jane found Sean tried to connect with all her clients. Jane had just remembered when Sean worked in her workplace, he asked Jane to let him prepare his examinations in her small office, because the other rooms were too noisy. And Jane agreed. Sean must have copied her telephone notebook! Jane was so angry that she said "you should go to hell." in her heart. Jane was also raring to fight with him if she were strong enough. Later she was calm but she sometimes still said to God to let Sean go to hell.

Months passed. One day Jane found Sean was on the person wanted advertisement. He had disappeared for 5 days. His wife took out this AD. In the afternoon the detectives went to Jane's office. The Sean's wife offered a list of people who may do something bad for her husband. Jane is on the number 1. The detectives left after having asked some questions. Jane was shocked.

Yes, more than one time, Jane cursed this young man to death. But she didn't do anything. She only wanted some punishments on him. But who does this? Her peaceful husband? No!...

Days later in the afternoon a tax collector visited Jane. After finishing all the tax process, he asked if Jane knew a young men named Sean, who did the same business as Jane's.

Jane said, "Yes, I know him. He once worked here ."

"I took charge in his tax before. I have just come back from his funeral. He was killed by 3 men. The police arrested 2, one is still in large. Sean had done some business and had some conflicting with them and may owe them some money. They cheated him to a far away house and beat him to death. Poor his parents! They raised him twenties years, supported him through his college and gave him all his saving to start the business. He was killed now. He is less then 25."

Jane felt a little released. She and her husband were totally innocents now. But she could not move. She will not curse anyone in all her life.

Doing laundry, cooking & learning English

my lunch
Today at noon I cooked 3 dishes. One is a half fish, as we may could not finish a whole fish; another is salad; the last one is walnuts and mushroom. The walnuts are fresh, so it took me long time to get the skin off. We also have rice. We have eaten the same dishes several days ago in a restaurant, so I tried to cook them today. Do you often imitate to cook the food you ate in restaurants?

Recently I am busy on bloging. So I am not a qualified housekeeper. My husband even reminded me to do laundry. I usually use washing machine to do laundry. But if the clothes is not heavy or there is only socks and stocking needed to wash, I will do laundry by hands. How do you do laundry?

At 5 o'clock in the afternoon I took taxi to go to school, because doing laundry by hands took me too much time. Our class was from 5:30 to 7:00. Then I took bus home. At 8 o'clock I arrived. Then I cooked dinner for us. It was noodles. After dinner I am here bloging. Firstly I wrote blog with Word software for it can check some simple errors and give spelling suggestions. Then I post it.

I found there is a mistake on my photo. It should be "my lunch". But it is not very easy to correct it. I am tired now.

So Good night!
Have a good dream!

In this internet bar there were hundreds computers. It was packed by young people, playing on-line games and watching movies.

a composition

Today my husband sent my computer to a company to have it repaired . It has been reinstalled my operating system and now works well.lucklly, I only lost most softwares and the most data is kept. However it still can’t get access to internet. Tomorrow I will check the telephone company, which is in changes of ADSL working. So I will post this essay later in internet café.

Today we told about why we study English. 3 of 6 students want to study abroad, including me. We all are preparing exams. So I tried to write a composition. Here is the topic:

“there is only one definition of success---to be able to spend your life in your own way.” To what extent do you agree or disagree with the opinion expressed above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

Here is my composition:

Everyone dreams to be success. Those dreams are definitely connected with happiness, harmony and affluences. However people’s dreams may be really different from each other. Like my friend Lisa, who is a nurse , regarded helping people to recover is the most meaningfully thing in the world. But Abby, my another friend, think nursing is scary, because it is dealing with sick people. Sometimes it is too bloody. Abby wants to work for government for it’s security and stability, although Lisa thinks it is too boring. In this case we can see success has a wide variety of different definitions for different people. At this level I do agree with this statement.

However, it is not unlimited. One’s action may be not beneficial for others, but at least it should not bother or harm others. I have read a piece of news. It says, one man loved a woman older then him 10 years. The village didn’t accept them so they moved to the mountains out of the way.
Later they had 5 children. Now they are all adults and live healthily. I think this is acceptable. Life is only one time for everyone. Why not live in his own way? But another person’s action is totally unacceptable. He killed some beggars since he wanted to release them from bad living conditions. He did what he wanted but harmed others. Beggars have their dreams, even though the others think their dreams are low and small.

In a word, I agree that “there is only one definition of success---to be able to spend your life in your own way.” If you don’t bother or harm others’
lives.
we all learn English!!!

Here is my composition:

in this essay I will give reasons why I partly agree that there is only one definition of success---to be able to spend your life in your own way.

Firstly, success has different definitions for different people. Everyone dreams to be success. Those dreams are definitely connected with happiness, harmony and affluences. However people’s dreams may be really different from each other. For example, my friend Lisa, who is a nurse , regarded helping people to recover the most meaningfully thing in the world.

Secondly, one’s success can not be harmful for our society or other people. One’s action may be not beneficial for others, but at least it should not bother or harm others. Such as a piece of news I have read . It says, one man loved a woman older then him 10 years. The village didn’t accept them so they moved to the mountains out of the way. They didn’t have close connections with others. Later they had 5 children. Now they are all adults and live healthily. I think this is acceptable. Life is only one time for everyone. Why not live in his own way? On the other hand, some person’s action is totally unacceptable. For instance, some young people killed some beggars since they wanted to release them from bad living conditions. They did what he wanted but harmed others. Beggars have their dreams, even though the others think their dreams are low and small.

Lastly, I don’t think celebrities are more successful than ordinary residents. My English teacher’s father is a famous scientist, who discovered a new medicine. But for me he is more important than his father, even though his father was interviewed by Queen. In my thanking being a good mother is as same successful as being a good president.

In sum up, I agree that “there is only one definition of success---to be able to spend your life in your own way.” If you don’t bother or harm others’ lives.

the smoking travel in China

In this morning I called the telephone company and an engineer told me to reinstall the ADSL drive. I did so and then I was able to access to the internet. Later I found I had left the connecting wire ( that connects my mp3 player with a computer ) in the internet café, so I went there to get it back. Fortunately the casher kept it for me.

Recently it is hot. Cooking in the hot summer is not a pleasant work. Every time after cooking I take a shower. My friend told me she would like to fix an air conditioner in her kitchen. It is a good idea, though it will waste lots of energy. Our city always lacks electricity and water in the summer. I was surprised when I heard some governments encourage people use more electricity. We always are told to save resources.

A western English teacher told me an interesting phenomenon---the smoking travel in China. It means that lots of foreign English teachers who don’t smoke or smoke occasionally in their own countries do smoke often in China. When they come back to their country, they stop smoking again. That is because cigarettes are much cheaper in China. He thinks China government levies too less tax on tobacco industry. Uk government levies heavier tax on tobacco industry. It offers free health care for it’s citizens, so it pays more attentions to the bad habits that lead diseases. Government decisions profoundly influence people’s behaviors. This teacher is from USA. He has also been to Japan, Korean and Europe. Traveling makes people wise. Do you agree?

Have a good weekend!
See you next week!

best wishes for the baby

Summer in xi’an means watermelons, peaches and ducks. It is also hot and humid like in Japan. At day we are woken up the sound of Cicadas, at night we sleep with the sound of crickets. I sill remembered when I was younger, my mother fanned to make me go to sleep. Fortunately now most places have got air-conditioners, so we speed most time inside. When it is dark at 8pm, many people are walking and playing outside, in parks or just on sides of roads. The nearest park opens from 6am to 12pm and it is free. Many restaurants offer BBQ. People eat toasted fish, lamp, beef and chicken wings.
the street near my community
This is a main street near my neighborhood. I took this photo on a bridge. In xi’an there are lots of big internet café, especially near universities.Though in cities many people have computers.

Recently a famous Chinese singer has a baby. This baby has birth defect---hair lips. The baby’s father---a famous actor admitted this news in his blog. Because when they took their infant to USA to have the operation, some people saw them and reports published the news. More than 10000 people post commends to make best wishes for the baby. Nowadays some doctor volunteers from western courtiers came to our city to take hair lips operations free for poor people. They are so charitable!

Lots of people criticized the journalists losing the conscience. People always want to know truth, though it may hurt other’s feelings. In this case it involves minors’ rights.

Happy to hear you will travel to Nagato. It must be cool and quiet. I like traveling, too. My husband and I often drive into countryside on weekends with some friends. We claim mountains, swim in rives, go fishing in ponds and eat meal in farms. I didn’t go with him recently, because I was entranced with learning English and I don’t want to miss any class.

Enjoy your trip.

“I feel lucky the hooligans don’t come to China”

before our english class

We are waiting for our English teacher before class. The girl on the right of this picture studies fashion design. She thinks the most fashionable cities are London and Tokyo instead of Pairs. Do you agree? The third girl on the right will take IELTS. She wants to study in UK. Peter is the second on the left. He has an on-line store. He sells jades. This is a optional class, so I don’t know everyone here. It is a big class. Sometimes there are more than 30 students. How many students are in your English class?

Our teacher is 26 years old and comes from UK. He is tall and has London accent. In every class he first answers our questions of English leaning, and then he organizes us to play games in English. In his class we feel funny but a little nervous, because we want to perform well and win the games. He is polite and has a good sense of humor. You can never believe London has hooligans depending on his behaviors.

Earlier during the World Cup, we talk about football hooligans. He said, “I feel lucky the hooligans don’t come to China”. I am impressed by his words. In every country there are some good things and bad things. People tend to emphasize the culture differences among different countries, but in this globalization time I sometimes think the differences among individuals are much bigger than differences among different countries. The stereotypes are cliché.

I like to read all commends. Everyday I review all my blogs and try to find some new commends. It is so interesting!

an ancient city

Yesterday evening it lighted, thundered and rained. But today sun shined and it was as hot and humid as before. You are very lucky to escape the heat, Lewis!

Today I took some photos on the way to my English school. When the bus passed the gate entry of the city wall, I took off the bus and walked around to take photos. When I came back home and tried to save them into my computer, unfortunately I had got a new but bad idea--- I uploaded them to my yahoo photo album to save my computer’s space. When I needed using them, I found all the photos became too small! The original ones were all deleted. Luckily I found the one and only one picture in my garbage can---the bell tower. Meg probably played with it,so I was able to get this one.
the bell tower

The bell tower is on the center of xi’an. It is an ancient building and has been repaired for many times. The top of the tower is coved by gold-panel, so it always shines. Many birds live under the roof. During the sunrises and sunsets we can see lots of bird flying around the tower. As what it’s name implied there is a big bell in the bell tower, but it has not been used for telling the time any more.

Our city has very long history---over 3100 years. 13 dynasties made their capitals here. So people are not surprised the news that somewhere were found a historic site. When I was younger, on a construction site near my home people dug and found an ancient grave with some pots and coins---not very valuable. Earlier in this year on another construction field, people found a grave with many antiquities. The most unusual thing is there were some pots of alcohol. It smelled good but it’s light green. Experts said this alcohol was about 1000 years old and it could not be drunk, since it contained too much copper.

The most famous attraction is Museum of Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses. Queen has been there. Clinton has been there, too. Most tourists who visited china visited there. Welcome to Xi'an, especially if you like history.

See you !

my essaies and pictures

Your trip is fantastic, Lewis! I like swimming in the sea, too. It is easier to control one’s body than swimming in the river, though the salt doesn’t taste good. Meg and I both like sushi, especially tuna fish sushi. There is a Korean restaurant near my home. In recent years Korean TV series and restaurants became in fashion. Once I tried to cook sushi at home, but I totally failed. I like riding bike, too. However, I haven’t ridden bike for a long time since I lost my bike. I have already lost 3 bikes until now.

Today it is still hot. Since I have writing my blog, I always took my camera everywhere, like a journalist. It is a little funny! I don’t have confidence about my English writing, so I post lots of pictures to compensate for readers.

table tennis tables

This is a playground not far from my home. There are lots of table tennis tables. So it is easy to understand why Chinese athletes have got so many gold medals in table tennis competitions. This building is where the students have classes. It is quiet during the summer vacations. A mother was playing table tennis with her son when I took this photo. After this photo is uploaded, they will be too small to be seen clearly.

If someone speaks like BBC broadcasting--- formal and using lots of decreasing tones, I regard he speaks with a London accent; if someone speaks with rolling tones---like VOA broadcasting, I guess he comes from the USA; if some speaks really fast, I expect he comes from New Zealand. However, I often realized those characteristics only after they have told us where they are from. Actually English with accents never bothers me. It is easy to understand each other after talking for a while. Different Chinese accents can be totally different. Cantonese sounds like foreign language for me, though I like Cantonese songs.

I have been to terra cotta army many times. My parents were born in xi’an and I was also born in xi’an. All things that surprised tourists are very common in my eyes. But after traveling to some places in China, I found xi’an is unique. You can find the traces that human lived and left. I haven’t been abroad yet. Hopefully, one day I’ll saved enough money and get the chances to visit some other countries! I really want to try my English in an English spoken country!

I am glad you are interested in our history. I am interested in the UK history, too. Like Hyoshil, I was also never good at histories. What is more I am not good at geography, too. 2 or 3 days ago I looked at the map and found the UK is small geographically, but why it has so profoundly influenced the World? What is the most important thing that made the UK ahead other nations? Do you know the answers?

A hypothesis about Who pays the wedding bill

Today I bought some beef and a radish. It took me over 1 hour to boil them , but they were well worth it. The pieces of beef and a radish boiled with ginger, green onion and red pepper are really tasty. Their soup is a little spicy but really fresh. This dish and rice made a good meal !

Talking about the Bibinbap, it is a rice dish mixed with some vegetable and an egg in a hot stone bowl, isn’t it? I have seen it when we ate sushi. Now I really want to try it.

I like taking bath at a hot spring. In the previous community I lived there is a very deep well which draws hot water out of deep under earth. This water is rich of sulfur. It good for taking a bath but can not be drunk. I absolutely love this community just because of the hot spring. Are there the same hot spring communities in your country?

There is a wedding shop next to our English school. Once we talk about who pays the wedding bill. Traditionally, the bride’s parents pay the bill in the UK, do they? It is just opposite of Chinese tradition. In china, groom’s parents always pay the bills. In china the ratio of men against women is about 106~109:100. So there is an old saying---there are some men who can not find wives but no women who can not find husbands. In the UK, woman’s number is always more than man’s after the industrial revolution. So on the whole, who is difficult to get married, whose father pays the wedding bills. Does that make some sense? Or it is different in other countries?

I am a little sleepy…

The people children drew are growing up with them

Children like drawing.
a picture drawn by a toddler
The characteristics of the people they drew change as they are growing up. In toddler’s pictures all people look like toddlers: very big head and very small body. Adults’ clothes and hair styles are different from children’s in their pictures, but the proportion of their bodies is as same as children’s. As children grow, this proportion is changing---the head is becoming relatively smaller and the body is becoming bigger. Those changes also happen in the pictures they draw. When they are becoming teenagers, this change is dramatically. The people in their pictures are maturating, too. It is surprising to see this change. Raising a child is a heavy but interesting job.

a picture drawn by a older child

I took these photos in our classroom. There are many children’s pictures.
The first one is drawn by a younger child; the second one is drawn by a older child. The rations of bodies are different according to the drawers’ ages.

Today in our English class we talked about marriage and divorce. Our teacher, who is from the USA, said there are lots of people who divorced after their children become adults. The couples don’t love each other for a long time but it is too difficult to solve the custody dispute. After all their children become adults, they have no reasons to live together anymore. It sounds like a great sacrifice.

On my way home I bought some fast food in KFC---hamburgers, fried chicken wings and mashed potatoes. So I don’t need to cook tonight!!!

a good weekend---Visiting my parents

Yesterday afternoon I visited my parents. I had not seen them since I started writing my blog. So I missed them very much. I have two brothers. My parents live with my younger brother’s family. I bought lot of delicious food---cookies, nuts, fruits and a bottle of super concentrated beverage. Then I called my husband. While I was waiting for him, I took some pictures.

It is a corner of a museum. It is near my parents’ home. This stone sheep looks smiling.

Finally, my husband came and we went to my parents’ home together. They were really happy to see us and they wanted to see my daughter. But Meg didn’t come. Recently Meg prefers to stay at home. We talked for a long time.

Then my mother urged us to go home, because Meg hadn’t have diner yet. Soon we arrived home and I cooked noodles for us. After eating I washed up. And so on I took a shower and laid on bed. I had a very tight sleep.

I got up late today and have a very good rest today.
see you!

international citizens & English

We are in our living room now. I’m sitting by my computer desk. My daughter is sitting in front of our eating table and watch TV.

Her interest changed to TV from computer. She likes Korean dramas. Further on her taste has influenced me. While I am surfing on internet, I also watch the TV. Recently it shows “a man and a woman in an attic”. The story is funny just like it happens in China.

In this Korean drama the well-educated people speak fluent English and lived abroad for some years, like in China. I read an article about “the international citizens”, who know at least two languages, lived in two different countries for some years and have home in two different countries. So you are an international citizen, Lewis! Maybe some visitors to our blog are international citizens, too, such as hyoshil. When I read the commends from all over the world, I absolutely admit English deserves the repetition of an international language.
big goose pagoda
This is Big Goose Pagoda, built in 625 years AD. it was used to store Buddhist materials taken from India by the monks.

It was raining in those two days. The autumn is coming. When I go out, I will consider if I should put on a jacket. I am happy because I don’t need to worry about the electricity fee. I topped the electricity card too often in the last two month!

To my surprise, my parent came to my home today. When I came in my home in this afternoon, my mother was parking the garbage! I was embarrassed for the mess. I don’t visit my parents regularly. When Meg was younger, we used to visit them every week. Now I visit them when I miss them. It takes one hour to do to their home by bus. My mother who was a teacher of middle school often comes to my home to teach Meg math. So we often see each other. Recently she didn’t come because of the hot weather.

Today's diary

Today I bought some duck eggs. I was going to preserve them into water filling with salt and seasoning. After 15-day-preservation the yolk will become tastier than before. It will taste like the eggs of autumn crabs. When I was busy in the kitchen, there was no water supply. Luckily, after about two hours we could get water.
the duck eggs will be preserved in this pot
At night, my daughter was in her room and locked the door. The day after tomorrow she will go to school---the new semester is coming. I was happy she didn’t watch TV tonight. I thought I could watch any programs I wanted. But I was wrong. My husband wanted to watch the war films. Finally I robbed the mobile control from his hand during the advertisement time.

In our town most people live in flats. So only a few people living at the ground floor have green fingers. We borrowed many words from English such as sofa, cool, MBA and so on. I saw a flat named “a green mansion”. It seems we use the mansion as Japanese.

Now there are lots of discounts in department stores, so it is a good time to go shopping. One of our friends will marry in the next month, so we are considering how many gifts of money we will send them. And I am also planning to buy some good dresses for the ceremony.

How to greet

When I meet friends, I usually smile, nod, or say “hello”. We don’t neither kiss nor hug our friends, except we are lovers. Once my close friend’s family traveled to our city from the USA, I treated them in a restaurant. After eating when we said goodbye, my friend’s parents hugged me and our faces touched. This is the only time I greet people according western etiquette. I like this forms. They make people closer and make me feel warm.

Recently I watched Korean dramas on the telly. The girls bows to their friends who drive them home when they say good-bye to each other. We don’t bow in our common life. Those girls seem really polite. Do the people often bow in your country?

Actually, it is easy to preserve duck eggs if you have the pot. First, you should wash them and have the water on the eggs evaporate until there is no water on eggs; Next, you boil water with lots of salt and seasoning and let them cool to the room temperature; Than, you put all eggs and cooled seasoning water into the pot which should be clean and dry. You also should make sure there is enough seasoning water to keep all eggs in it. Final, you cover the pot with the bowl upside down. And pour some clean water on the top edge, which will separate the inner air from outer air. After 12-15 days they will be done! During this time you should clean the edge and add some water. The sold preserved eggs have no seasoning in them. I wish you could taste the eggs I made!

“I topped the electricity card ”---I wanted to say I pay the electricity bill before I used it. They store the amount of electricity I bought to the IC card. After it was used up, I top(buy) the electricity again. It may be wrong.

escaping from the hospital

In this morning my daughter went to school. My husband and I drove to hospital, because he will have a health check.

We arrived there half hour before the hospital opens, but there is already a long queue. Fortunately the doctor came earlier than he should. After some regular exams he asked if my husband’s weight had changed a lot in this one year and if he had felt somewhere uncomfortable of his body. My husband said he hadn’t felt well after a fill diner. Then the doctor let him take a stomach mirror checking. The nurse told us the patient first should swallow a mirror, then she would keep the information the mirror transmitted, at last she would pull out the mirror.

Hearing that my husband felt so scary that he regretted telling the small problem he had. So we escaped from the hospital.

our city wall our city wall and moat

This is our city wall and moat. They are built thousands years ago. You can ride bike on the top of the wall, where is as wide as a street. The moat is deep. There are lots of cabs in the water.

Today Meg got 18 books for this semester. I bought lots of colorful paper to cover these books. I have to do this work now.

Lewis, reading your blog is enjoyable, thanks again!

Which is the male? And which is the female?

a copper lion another lion
Today I took these two pictures in front of an open market. There is each copper lion in each picture. They are couples. Can you tell who the male is? And who the female is? It is an old stereotype. I am happy the world is becoming more diverse. Man can take care of children and woman can play ball.

When I am feeling a bit rough, I usually wash my face with the cold water and drink some tea or coffee. I have seen my classmate spraying some water from a small bottle on her face to perk herself. She said before the A-level exams she had always used this method to keep awake. She must have been very tired during this year.

Today is the last day of my English class in this term. After one week I will begin the new English class. I paid the tuition today. It cost 580 Yuan for 3 months. Learning English costs lots---time, money and energy, doesn’t it? Every week I will go to school 2 times. Every class will last 1.5 hours. But there will be some free optional classes called “English corner”. I hope we will get more English corners.

Yesterday our company made some products all day and night, because our client wanted those products very soon. So yesterday evening about 2 or 3 hours we received or made phone calls with the workers or client. So we are exhausted today. Fortunately we already delivered the goods this morning.

conflicts between parents and chidren

One of my friends has some conflicts with his parents recently, because they don’t like his girlfriend and don’t agree this marriage. They said the girl is impolite and don’t have a good manner. My friend is so angry that he said he would marry her ever if the relationship with his parents would break.

I persuaded him to slow down his marriage.

In any situation an adult child should not break the connection with your parents. Despite they don’t like your choice and decision, you also should call them and visit them.

As a mother, I knew how difficult it is to raise a child. Just image, every night you are in deep sleep. When the child is crying, then you should get up, feed him and change his diaper. So this means you don’t have any whole sleep in 3 years.

Any parents may sacrifice some things in their life for their children. But they don’t tell this to their children.

My friend agreed my opinion after out talking. We went to his parents’ home together since he was embarrassed after the big quarrel.

I think his parents will agree his marriage if he insists. Anyway they want he will be happy.

What is your opinion?
Bye for now.

Life is above everything

I am never interested in politics. But this news is so shocked me that I’d like to write something. If I am wrong, please forgive my shallowness. And I also welcome all sharp and direct criticizes.

I read this news 2 or 3 days ago on our local newspaper. It is about an English soldier who committed suicide because he didn’t want to go Iraq battle field. His army leader told him that he should shoot the children on street since they may carry the bomb. However, this soldier felt guilty about that so he committed suicide.

I feel so sorry about him if this news is true. I think he has independent mind though his action would hurt lots of people’s feelings especially his parents’.

I still remember when our English teacher asked us, “Who do you admire best? And why?” I answered, “the Queen Victoria because she made the UK the strongest country during her time.” Then my teacher who comes from the UK told us, “We feel ashamed about this history because we led lots of hurt to other countries.”

Now if someone asks me the same question, I think I will say Gandhi. He created the peaceful way to solve the problems. He freed the black people hut don’t hurt the white people. He is a great leader.

Some people have successful careers. They may start from very low status but get fame, money and high place in their late lives. But if what they had done makes other people more painful, their successes are meaningless.

Today I went shopping and bought lots of nice shoes and clothes. When I took bus I found the night was really beautiful so I took this picture.
the bell tower at night
I wish our world would be more peaceful, so people all over the world can enjoy the quiet and beautiful night!

Best wishes!

Can too many cats be a disaster?

In China some men stay at home to take care of their children, too. But they often feel a bit ashamed to admit that. They feel the peer pressure that men are usually bread maker. I hope it will change soon.

There are lots of homeless cats in our building complex. When I am walking in our complex, I often see different cats.

This is my favorite one---a white Persian cat. Her name is “miss”. Her fur is so long that I guess she feels very hoot in the summers. Her eyes have different color: one is yellow; another is gray. She is friendly and doesn’t scratch any people.

The scary one is a black cat. When I had just moved here, one night I came home with some KFC food. The big black cat sat in front of the entry of our corridor and stared at me in the dark. He didn’t give me the way and had looked at me for long time. I was so scared that I stop walking until he walked away. I was sure he will fight me for the food, if I were not bigger than him.

There are 2-3 women who feed those cats everyday. The children call them cat mothers. They sometimes take bathes for those cats. And they also help the cats have babies. But they don’t offer shelters for these cars. I think that is because there are too many cats. There are only 3 buildings in our building complex, but nearly 20 homeless cats.

Cats make our neighborhood more interesting, hut they also brought some problems. In the spring and autumn they make big noises in our quiet community all nights. Some people said they couldn’t fall asleep. Some people said these cats carry fleas and skin disease. The worse is cats become more and more. They sometimes try to find food in the dump and tips, so they made the yard untidy.

Well, too many mice are a disaster, but what about too many cats?

the minimum wage of a day & the fee to use the bathroom

Actually I don’t know I am a dog person or cat person. If the cat and dog can combine together, it will make a perfect pet having the dog’s
loyalty and cat’s self-care. Maybe I want too much. In our city keeping dogs should have licenses, but cats shouldn’t. So there is no limitation on the keeping cats. It seems everywhere has many stray cats, doesn’t it?

Once my friend told me, it cost 10 Yuan to use the toilet in Venice when he traveled there. It is just the minimum wage per day in our city. That means a worker in our city works a day can only afford use the bathroom once in Venice.

So it is not surprised why some people immigrated to other countries and did some underemployed jobs. I knew a guy who graduated from a famous Chinese university worked as pizza deliverer in Canada. Later he came back to China and became a famous educator. Some of my friends also have harsh time when they went to other countries. A woman who used to be a professor in a college worked as a baby-sister in the US.

Anyway works can not be distinguished as honorable and mean. If the works are honest, they are valuable. Hopefully underemployed people will soon find some suitable jobs.
