A little devil and an angel are coming!
The Eve of St. Nicholas…
I would like to share with you our customs and traditions here in Slovakia during December. The first holiday is the eve of St. Nicholas on 5th December.
If I am not wrong the eve of St Nicholas passes without notice in Britain. I am surprised that the British children have not found out what they are missing. You can imagine how exciting a time it is for children when St. Nicholas arrives in a horse drawn coach with his big bag full of sweet surprises.
Children clean their shoes and put them in the windows. The next morning the shoes are full off chocolate, fruit, nuts, sweets and so on. But bad children get a piece of coal and birch as well. These things are brought by Santa Claus or Father Christmas to the shoes. In spite of the fact that my children already know that I am the Santa Claus they always get their favourite box of chocolates. In Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic, Mikulas is often accompanied by an angel who acts as a counterweight to the ominous devil- Krampus, the frightening helper who wants to take away the bad children.
If you are interested you might have a look at here and read more about customs around the world. How do you celebrate this day? I am looking forward to reading your comments about that.
I have prepared gifts; bead Santa Clauses, which are ready to be given away today
These Christmas decorations were made by my daughter 5 years ago
Take care, my friends, and I hope to hear from you soon. Now I must skedaddle and polish my shoes - perhaps Santa Claus stops… Who knows?
Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
