What's cooking? You still have time to send us your recipes!

Good news! We've had some fantastic recipes: thank you! I've been reading your comments that you'd like a bit more time to send us in your photos and recipes, so I've decided to extend the deadline. Kind, aren't I? ;-) We've had recipes for all sorts of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, but what about some recipes for desserts or cakes? I can't be the only person with a sweet tooth, can I?

My sweet tooth!

And now that autumn is here in England, one of the nicest things to do is sit down with a bowl of hot soup - so how about some soup recipes? Have you got some? Then email them to us by Saturday 26th 2008 to learningenglish@bbc.co.uk

Take care

Carrie

Hi everyone,

I'm afraid you're stuck with me again! I must say I'm looking forward to trying out your recipe ideas for the 2009 BBC Learning English calendar! We've decided in the office that we'll share the recipes out and get people to cook them and then (if possible) bring the dish in to the office to share. I'm a bit concerned that if I try and make them all myself I'll end up looking like this....

A hippo

So, just in case you're sitting at home thinking "What calendar?" or "What recipe?", let me remind you that we're looking for recipes and photos for our 2009 calendar. For full details of what you need to do, just go the end of the blog. You'll see the date for sending us your contributions has changed to 19 October, so you have a bit more time to get cooking!

Actually I was lying in bed this morning, half asleep, when it occured to me that it might be useful to help you with some cooking vocabulary. Does anyone else have their best ideas when they're not quite awake, or is it just me? I fact, I now sleep with a notebook and pen beside the bed in case I wake up in the night and have a brilliant idea (actually, I don't usually have brilliant ideas: it's more likely to be "Don't forget to take the rubbish out"). The worst thing is, that if I do think of something, I scribble it down without turning on the lights and then when I get up in the morning, I can't read what I've written anyway. It must be a sign of getting old, because my memory is definitely getting worse. Has anyone got any tips to help improve my memory? The worse thing is trying to remember people's names. It's awful if I have to introduce someone to someone else - I quite often end up saying "You don't need me: I'll let you introduce yourselves to each other!" and walking away!

Anyway, I've gone completely off the subject of food now: let's get back to it. So this morning I was thinking about sharing some cookery vocabulary with you and it turns out that great minds think alike, because when I arrived in the office, i found that this week's episode of The Flatmates is all about cooking too - take a look! If you click on the Language Point tab of The Flatmates, you'll find loads of useful words (in fact when I finish this blog, I'm off to write a crossword on cooking - watch out for it here at the end of next week!)

In the meantime, I thought I'd leave you with a quick quiz. Using The Flatmates vocabulary, can you work out which word belongs to which picture? I'm not supposed to give you homework, and Paul will probably tell me off, but he's out of the office at the moment, so maybe he won't notice!

a spatula; a sieve; a saucepan; a frying pan; a wok; an oven; a hob; to chop; to slice; to dice; to boil; to roast A clue: pictures A-G are pieces of equipment and the rest are verbs!

So, I hope this has inspired you to get cooking and send in your recipes!

Take care

Carrie

This is what you need to do:

How would you like to help us here at BBC Learning English? We're just about to start designing our new 2009 calendar (here's the link to the 2008 calendar in case you haven't seen it.)

This time we want our calendar to feature recipes for traditional dishes from the countries that you live in.

Send us:
1) A recipe for a traditional dish. It needs to be something that other people around the world can try to cook, so try to choose something with ingredients that can be bought in other countries too.

2) A photo of the ingredients (or one of the ingredients) or the finished dish

3) A photo of you holding what you have cooked

4) Your name and the name of the city and country where you live

Last year we had an amazing response from you and I'm sure the same thing will happen this time. Sadly, because there are only 12 months in the year, we won't be able to use all the photos that we receive. However, we'll create a site to showcase as many of the pictures as we can. We will also put the final calendar on our website so that you can download your own copy in December 2008 - a great December gift for friends and families!!!

You need to send your pictures to us by Sunday 19 October to learningenglish@bbc.co.uk and put "2009 recipe calendar" in the subject box.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
You must own the copyright to any photos that you send us; you also agree to grant the BBC a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive, sublicenseable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt and publish any material you send to us.

Oh Carrie, there's only one Carrie like you in this World! To be honest I've read only half of your blog because I'm in a lunch break. However I could get the main idea and I think your tips will be very helpful for us. Thank you so much! My problem is that I'm waiting for the final touches in my new kitchen. If they finish it until the end of this week, I can cook something edible and try to get a decent shot.

Hi Carrie, You're very kind for giving us some vocabulary on cooking. You're always thinking of helping. I agree with Adri, there's only one Carrie in the World. Homework: G) a spatula B) a sieve F) a saucepan d) a frying pan E) a wok C) an oven A) a hob J) to chop H) to slice L) to dice K) to boil I) to roast Have a nice day and take care xxx Cris

Hi Carrie, Guess what, eu was trying to convince my frined who lives in London and is currently here under a dental treatment with me to take a gift for you all at the BBC LE. I'd like to send a clay pot filled with chocolates that are the both things that represents my city. The clay pot is a pan we use for cooking the "moqueca capixaba" and is the main handicraft and the chocolates because the "Garoto" factory is located here. But no way...he is afraid to do that. He says that the things there in London is very different from here. We can't simplily enter a place and say here is a gift from Brazil that my friend sent. Anyway, I'll try to cook it especially for you tomorrow and get some shots. If there's time enough, I'll also cook a "Cuca de banana" that is a typical sweet dish here (some German contribution to our cousine)and get shots of me preparing this wonderful and nutritious recipe in my brand new- still not ready kitchen!
