  • Author of a seminal book on the rise of the Afghan mujahideen
  • Became a jungle farmer on the edge of the Golden Triangle (north-east Thailand)
  • Survived being shot in the head by Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka

It's always a joy to come face-to-face with our audience - like when I was packing up after a live inject from the Afghan Loya Jirga, charting the future of the country post Taliban and realised that every single one of the delegates' drivers had their car radios tuned to the BBC.
