It is not possible to hear the BBC World Service, or any other BBC channels, on a UK DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) digital radio outside the UK. This is because the digital multiplex which carries the channels within the UK does not extend outside the country.
In Malta, BBC World Service can be heard 24 hours a day on the DAB+ service on the multiplex Digi B Network 1. A DAB+ radio purchased in Malta is necessary to listen (DAB radios purchased in the UK operate on a different codec).
In Australia, the SBS Channel 6 DAB+ service carries a special BBC schedule (at times, however, SBS may use the channel for their own special events broadcasts). click More information
In addition, ABC News Radio transmits over 70 hours a week of BBC World Service English programming on its DAB+ channels. click More information
Again, a DAB+ radio purchased locally is required.
BBC World Service has collaborated with DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) and the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle on the development of digital short and long wave media, and transmissions launched in 2009.
Currently, BBC World Service in English is carried on DRM frequencies for Europe between 0500 and 0900 GMT daily. In South Asia, there are limited transmissions in English and Hindi.
Special receivers are required. Please note that funding for these services is not guaranteed beyond 2011.
