Building a modern China

Building a modern China

Return to White Horse Village

While China's economy has boomed over the past 30 years, many of its 700 million farmers have been stuck in poverty.

A painful process of modernisation in rural areas has brought with it the promise of wealth. But so far, for many farmers, it has mostly been just a promise.

Part three

Carrie Gracie has been visiting White Horse Village for the last three years, witnessing the forced transformation of a rural mountain community into a 21st Century city.

In the final part of this series there is also talk of sacrifice for the common good, but will the promised new life ever materialise?

One man, the local Communist Party secretary, has to convince the villagers to give up their old way of life.

Despite this objective, he is clearly torn between his duties to family and community and the party.
