Prudential buys AIG's Asian business

The British insurer Prudential has agreed to buy the Asian subsiduary of AIG, expanding its business in the region with the biggest deal ever in the sector.

The company known affectionately as the "Pru" in the UK will pay $35.5 billion to acquire AIA from American International Group.

The deal that Prudential has described as "transformational" will mean the proportion of its profits from new business generated in Asia will jump to 60%, from 44%, as it trebles its customer base to 30 million in the region.
