For most internet users, the search engine is one of the most important tools on the computer.
It is the door through which people enter the web and look for the news and information which interests them.
At the moment, Google dominates the search engine business, at least in Europe and the US. But Microsoft wants a bigger slice of the market too, and it has teamed up with Yahoo to win new customers.
Microsoft's Bing search engine will power the Yahoo website and Yahoo will in turn become the advertising sales team for Microsoft's online offering.
The 10-year deal is set to benefit both companies as they develop new ways to utilise the world wide web.
Duncan Bartlett asked Rebecca Jennings of Forester Research to explain the implications of the deal.
