The Northern Star
Melanie C was born Melanie
Chisholm in Liverpool in 1974, where her Mum was a singer and
her Dad played bass. Her first recordings were with the Spice
Girls, who are the most successful British all-female band
year, after taking time
out from the Spice Girls, she released her first solo album,
The Edge talked to Melanie about global fame, how she
started out and her closest personal relationships.
The solo album
In 1999, despite the enduring popularity of the Spice Girls,
Melanie decided to take a break to record a solo album. With
two of the other band members about to become parents (Victoria
and Mel B), she felt that "the time was right for me...
There was a lot I wanted to express and explore, and so I went
off and had my own 'baby'!".
'Northern Star' is a platinum-selling album in the UK,
with sales exceeding 300,000 copies, and is still in the UK
Top 20 Album Chart after 26 weeks. It has spawned several successful
singles, from the guitar rock of 'Going Down' to the most recent
hit, 'Never Be The Same Again' with Lisa Left-Eye Lopes from
TLC. On the album, she has collaborated with people as diverse
as William Orbit and the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones.
with all successful pop groups, the Spice Girls have had
their detractors, both in the public and with music industry
critics. Just like many boy bands, the all-girl fivesome,
was accused of not being able to sing. Melanie was the
exception to this, as she often sang the ad libs in the
songs and her voice was more noticeable than the others.

does not believe it to be true.

of opinion... Not everyone can like it."
Since the Spice Girls first released their debut single,
'Wannabe', in 1996, Melanie has hardly taken a break.

her solo work, she has to try to find ways to relax during
her hectic schedule. Known as 'Sporty Spice', what exercise
does she get now?
"I've started doing a lot of yoga, which I've
found really helps because I get a lot of anxiety, I'm
quite a shy person. But I don't train as much as I used
to, I've slowed down a little bit... I was going a bit
Although with little time for romance, Melanie currently
has a partner, and reveals that she has been seeing Jay
from boy band 5ive, a relationship that began at the Brit
Awards this year and was made public by the UK tabloid
newspapers. Melanie says that a man's sense of humour
and self-confidence is important to her, but she says
"I don't really ever go for a specific type".
She met Jay for the very first time at the MTV Awards
two years ago in Milan. Melanie says that he was not a
fan of the Spice Girls, but is she a fan of 5ive? "I
