The competition receives plays from almost every country in the world, with stories about families, love, sex, poverty and politics.
You can listen to extracts from a few of the plays entered into this year's competition below.
They were performed by an ensemble cast, in front of an invited audience of industry professionals, at the BBC's Council Chamber in London.
