![]() CLICK BELOW TO FIND OUT MORE Burkina Faso It was the revolutionary president Thomas Sankara who changed the country's name from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso after his coup d'etat in 1983. The words Burkina and Faso come from the Mossi and the Djola language but taken together they translate into "Land of the People of Integrity". In French, Burkina's offical language they say "Le Pays des Hommes Integres" Thomas Sankara was killed in a coup in 1987 by his revolutionary comrade, Blaise Campaore who has been the president of Burkina Faso ever since. The people call themselves Burkinabe and the majority speak Moore. Burkina Faso is a small landlocked country situated in West Africa and bordered by Mali and Niger on the north and by the Ivory Coast and Ghana on the south. It has a typical tropical climate with a single rainy season and a long dry season.
