Beleaguered President Hosni Mubarak has been making moves to re assert control of the capital and other major cities after nearly a week of protests aimed at ousting him.

Police have been ordered back on to the streets, the overnight curfew has been extended and there are reports of the army now tightening check points around the capital Cairo.

Mr Mubarak has ordered his new prime minister to tackle inflation, unemployment and move towards political reform.
