Much has been reported about efforts by the United Nations to help victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A new UN panel is visiting the country to find out the needs of those who have been sexually violated.

The women, the children, even the men all need different support.

The team which is in Congo, plans to travel to several provinces to get first hand information.

Thousands of people are raped each year in Congo, where sexual violence is widely used as a weapon of war.

Brita Schmidt is policy director with Women for Women international, an organisation that is helping rape victims rebuild their lives. She spoke to BBC Focus on Africa's Sophie Ikenye.
