An increasingly frail Nelson Mandela celebrated his 92nd birthday at the weekend.

But the recent focus has often fallen on his grandson Mandla who has emerged as a key power-broker within the family, as well as a political player in he country.

Mandla hails from the family of Mr Mandela's first wife, Evelyn and has portrayed himself as the protector of the Mandela name.

Family spokesman is a role that has become increasingly relevant as Mr Mandela's advancing age keeps his public engagements to a minimum.

BBC Focus on Africa's Farouk Chothia profiles Mandla Mandela.
