A new political party has been launched in Zimbabwe by former finance minister Simba Makoni.

A defector from President Mugabe's party, the ZANU-PF, Dr Makoni was once seen as the only serious inside challenger to the president.

However, he competed as an independent candidate and lost in the disputed elections of March 2008.

Simba Makoni's party enters the political fray in the midst of continuing tension in the power-sharing government of ZANU-PF and the MDC.

Hassan Arouni spoke to Dr Makoni on the line to Harare after launching his Mavambo (Dawn) party.
