Ghana-UK school partnership at Number 10

Gordon Brown with young campaigners inside Downing Street

Twin schools join the "Education for All" campaign

Kennedy Arkah, Head Teacher from Kak Primary School in Ghana, which is linked with Bowes School in Enfield, accompanied pupils from his twin school to Downing Street on Tuesday 4th March.

Bowes School pupils asked the British Prime Minister for his personal promise to get every child into school worldwide.  The visiting head teacher added his voice to the Global Campaign for Education.

Partnership brings the message home

Tens of millions of children around the world are still missing out on a primary education, a fact which Kennedy Arkah knows about first hand.

"My message to the PM was to ask world leaders to make a real committment towards childrens education, especially for girls in the remotest parts of Africa who don't have access to education," says Kennedy. "Without education, we will not get anywhere."

The Enfield Ghana school partnership brings the Education for All campaign home to pupils in Enfield, and both schools hope the partnership will improve attendance.

Lisa Taner, teacher and link co-ordinator at Bowes School, is concerned that children are giving up their education in order to generate income for their families. "Education is not free for them," says Lisa. "We hope our partnership will motivate kids to attend school in Ghana more often, and Kennedy is using our partnership as a tool to do that."

Amongst the campaigners were Mustafa, Diana and Billy, who were all flying the flag for Global Education.

They carried a giant 'Send My Friend' card for Gordon Brown to sign, pledging to get the remaining 72 million children into school by 2015.

12 year old Billy says it was amazing to meet the PM and to see how everything operates inside Downing Street, "There is no way to describe it really, it was fantastic!"

How did they do that ?
