Barack Obama had suddenly and without the least warning chosen to visit my school. He entered my classroom a rainy Monday at noon. He explained to the astonished students that the reason for his visit was to experience a normal student’s life in North Jutland. Furthermore, he wanted one of us to show him around. I volunteered for the task.

I quickly discovered that Barack Obama was everything people have said he was. He was kind, generous and a good listener. The first thing we did was to enter a class that was being taught religious studies. He was very surprised to see how openly peopled talked about different religions. I explained to him that in Denmark people aren’t as religious as in the USA and that people in general have greater knowledge about Muslims, Catholics, Buddhists and other religions. Barack Obama thought it was a good way of preventing religious extremism and I agreed. If everyone knew a little bit about all religions, they would find out that many religions are alike.

We discussed how the United States affects the world and especially Europe. I have always wanted a more ‘green’ society and environment in Denmark. I told him that his plans of making the USA into a ’green’ nation have already had a positive effect on our Prime Minister. Still, we both agreed that the Government alone couldn’t solve all problems. Every citizen has a responsibility to make sure that the world becomes more ‘green’.

On the highway towards my house in a fabulous car, I got an idea of what I might show him in my community. It was raining cats and dogs and the wind made the houses shiver and the boats in the harbour wobble. We stood at the pier looking out at the troubled see as the waves hit the rocks. “The financial crisis is going to be tough”, said Barack Obama, “but I believe that just like these rocks hold back the waves, our nation will overcome the obstacles”.

Suddenly, I saw a little star shaped stone under one of the rocks. I picked it up and gave it to the President. “Take this”, I said, “every time you are the slightest in doubt of your abilities as a President you must look at this stone and remember how the rocks in Saeby overcame the waves”.

How did they do that?
