IES López Neyra, Córdoba, Spain

IES López Neyra, Córdoba, Spain, are taking part in the Obamarama.

They are twinned with Prince Henry’s Grammar School, the hub school for the Obamarama.

Read "Obamaramas" from some López Neyra students:

Ana

Ana, 14

Which lesson would invite Barack Obama to sit in on? Why?

I would invite Barack Obama to sit on History and Geography class, because in this lesson we can explain our opinion of the world and he can share his opinion with us.

Who would you take him to meet in your school or community? Why?

I would take him to meet my principal, because she is a very good person and she could talk a lot with Obama about the problems in the world. They could talk about how they can lead the people because Obama is a president and my principal is the “president” of my high school.

What would you give him to remember you by?

I would give him a little flute, because my high school is involved in a project with the music school. I’m in this project and I play the flute. So, if I gave him a little flute, he would remember me for life.

Emilio

Emilio, 17

What would you tell him is special about your school?

For me, the most important thing in any school is the students who are striving to be better each day and teachers to help them. As I see it, Obama will understand all the effort being made by students.

What would you want him to change in your school or community? Why?

As far as I am concerned, Obama can’t make a big change in my school or community, but he and his huge effort for making the world a fairer place will be famous in the history of all countries.

What would you give him to remember you by?

To remind him of the visit to my school I would give him ... a blank sheet, to remind him that our future is not written yet, and he will help to write the following pages of history.

How did they do that?

IES López Neyra, Córdoba, Spain, have a partnership with Prince Henry’s Grammar School, West Yorkshire.

The link with IES López Neyra was revived in 2005 by a member of Prince Henry’s staff who had worked with the school in the past. Initially this started out as an MFL curriculum project, with Year 11 pupils being paired with a pupil at López Neyra and exchanging monthly letters. Each group also produced a simple video for the other. This was then extended to other classes, with three different year groups simultaneously involved in collaborative work of this type.

In 2006 Prince Henry’s decided to organise a study trip to Cordoba for Year 11 students. Although this was not an exchange, Prince Henry students spent a day in López Neyra, attending classes as well as a specially prepared flamenco dance show and workshop, and a joint volleyball match. The programme also included a joint excursion day, with plenty of opportunity for cross-cultural collaboration.

In 2007 López Neyra were successful in securing a grant from the Junta de Andalucía to bring a group of pupils to England. This gave Prince Henry’s the opportunity to return the hospitality, using a similar model of joint activity.

Subsequent visits to both schools have since taken place, and they are now working as part of a four-way partnership to prepare a new Comenius project.
