Young volunteer's eye witness account

It's exactly a month since the devastating earthquake which struck the Sichuan province of China.

Thousands of school children were among the 87,000 people killed or missing after the massive 12 May earthquake and 5 million people have been made homeless.

Liu Shiyou is a pupil at Nanshan Middle School in Mianyang City, not far from the epicentre of the Sichuan earthquake. She is 18.

Although her school was not directly affected by the earthquake, many have friends and relatives that have been killed.

In this moving account, Liu describes her experiences when she joined the thousands of citizens who volunteered to help victims of the disaster.

Her words are read by Hannah Maloney from William Bradford Community College in Leicestershire, which is twinned with Liu Shiyou's school.

How did they do that?

Leicestershire has a district link with Sichuan province which includes 12 school partnerships co-ordinated by international links officer, Helen Trilling.

Read more about the William Bradford - Nanshan link at BBC World Class and from the BBC Chinese service.

The partnerships are facilitated by the British Council.
