Dolen Cymru

Dolen Cymru twinning project in Lesotho

Why does Dolen Cymru twin?

Dolen Cymru builds friendship and understanding between the people of Wales and our twinned country of Lesotho. We foster a mutual respect and appreciation of each other's cultures and encourage the people of Wales and Lesotho to become responsible global citizens.  School partnerships are an important part of our work.

What kind of schools do you twin with?

Dolen Cymru twins all schools: Pre-schools, Primary, Middle, Secondary and Special Needs.

What region of the UK do you twin?

Dolen Cymru is Welsh organisation and twins schools from all over Wales.

What part of the world do you twin with?

We twin Welsh schools with schools in The Kingdom of Lesotho in Southern Africa.

What support do you offer to Dolen Cymru twinned schools in the UK?

* Dolen Cymru exchanges contact details for schools in Wales and Lesotho and gives advice on how best to start the twinning process.
* Twinned schools are invited to apply for the Global School Partnerships Grant to pay for a reciprocal teacher visit (funded by the Welsh Assembly Government). Dolen Cymru then organises and facilitates the visits with their partner organisation in Lesotho.
* Dolen Cymru has bi-lingual KS2 and KS3 teaching resources for schools that focus on Lesotho and Wales and advises schools on funding opportunities and means to develop links further.

What support do you offer to twinned Dolen Cymru schools overseas?

* The Lesotho Wales Link has a full-time staff member dedicated to educational projects. This work involves creating awareness of the school twinning programme, looking for interested schools and matching them with schools in Wales.
* Teachers are given training and support to contribute to and take part in the reciprocal visits programme and to build further on schools links after the visit.
* Teachers in Lesotho are given access to Lesotho Wales Link's training by visiting educationalists and best practise is shared between twinned schools in the same district.

Do you charge for your services?

Dolen Cymru does not charge any fee for twinning schools. Dolen Cymru charges an administrative fee to UK schools for organising reciprocal visits (£150 per visit). All other services are free except where minor administrative charges are made (e.g. for overseeing the transfer of funds from one school to the other).
