British Council

Why does the British Council twin?

The British Council builds mutually beneficial relationships between between UK schools and schools around the world to equip young people with the understanding and skills to live and work in an increasingly global society.

What kind of schools do you twin with?

British Council programmes are available in most cases to all schools, including nursery, primary, middle, secondary and special schools.  Some individual programmes are tailored towards a specific phase i.e. secondary.

What region of the UK do you twin?

Programmes like DfID Global School Partnerships are available to schools across the UK. Some other programmes are available to schools in England only. The DfES Global Gateway is available for use across the UK and in other countries.

What part of the world do you twin with?

The range of programmes offered allow for partnerships between UK schools and schools across Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Special programmes include DfID Global School Partnerships (Africa, Asia, Latin American and the Caribbean), Connecting Classrooms (we link school clusters in the UK with clusters in Africa), and Comenius (European partnerships).

We also have bilateral programmes with China, Japan and Russia.

What support do you offer to twinned British Council schools in the UK?

*Partner-finding services such as the DfES Global Gateway online and through "contact seminars", where teachers meet face to face.

*Funding through the range of programmes we manage, allowing for project management, administration and visits between partner schools for teachers and in some cases, pupils.

*Online collaborative programmes enabling schools to work in partnership with their counterparts around the world.

*Support and advice to schools who are looking to set up a partnership.

What support do you offer to twinned British Council schools overseas?

The British Council is represented in 110 countries and many offices provide support to school partnerships.

Support for DfID Global School Partnerships and the Connecting Classrooms programme is available from Education Officers in British Council overseas offices.

Funding for DfID Global School Partnerships is administered from the UK.

Funding for the Connecting Classrooms programme will be administered by country offices in Africa, supported from Cardiff.

Do you charge for your services?

All programmes are free and usually offer funding to support projects and partnerships.

British Council programmes are funded by the Department for Education and Skills, Department for International Development, European Commission, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and the devolved administrations.
