This week's news for kids

Monday 14th of December

Hi there, I'm Leah from Newsround. It's Monday the 14th of December.

First - it's the final week of the big climate change talks in Copenhagen - world leaders are trying to thrash out an agreement on what to do about global warming. But things didn't get off to a good start today - with some poorer countries walking out on the talks. They've come back to the discussions now, but they wanted to show richer countries that they are angry. They don't think better off countries like the U.S and U.K are trying hard enough to cut down on the harmful fumes that many people believe cause climate change.

More news now and after twelve long weeks Joe McElderry has fought off fierce competition to be crowned champ of the X factor. The teenager from South Shields picked up the one million pound recording contract in last night's big final.....and he couldn't believe it.....

CLIP: "I can't actually speak, and I just want to say thank you to Cheryl, she's been an amazing mentor.... to all the judges for all your comments and to everyone at home who's voted, I appreciate it so much."

It was a fantastic night for ITV too - more than half the people watching TV in the UK last night were tuning in to the X Factor.

Next up - it's less than two weeks until Christmas and for lots of people that means flying all over the world to spend time with family. So it will come as a nasty surprise for passengers flying with British Airways to find out that cabin crew are refusing to work over the festive season. The staff are angry about job cuts and working conditions - and the vast majority of them voted to stay off work to show their bosses how upset they are. It's not clear yet which flights are at risk of being cancelled.

And finally - Manchester United star Ryan Giggs has won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. Giggs has won more medals than any other footballer playing for a British team. The player - who has spent his whole club career with the reds - thanked Manager Alex Ferguson for all he has done for him...

CLIP: "He's been a father figure to me since I was 13, 14 and he's one of the main reasons why I've been so successful"

OK, that's all from Newsround. We're back tomorrow.

World bulletin

Hi there, I'm Hayley with the BBC World News for Children. It's Monday the 14th of December.

Coming up -

American friends accused of spying.

Sponsors drop Tiger.

And victory for Arsenal.

But first - it's the final week of the big climate change talks in Copenhagen - world leaders are trying to thrash out an agreement on what to do about global warming. One of the big issues that leaders will be talking about is the threat to ocean life. Scientists are worried that our oceans are becoming more acidic because of rising levels of carbon dioxide, caused by planes and factories. Experts reckon this could lead to some sea life becoming extinct.

But it's not just the experts that are having their say on climate change. Over the last week we've been hearing how climate change affects you. Today we hear from pupils in the Turkish City - Ankara - where 12 year old Kaya has been interviewing his class mate Carsten about his views on climate change......

CLIP:

"So Carsten how does climate change effect you?"

"I like the snow, I'm more of a winter guy and global warming is heating up the snow and there's not as much snow anymore and it takes away all those fun activities that you can do in winter"

"So, what are you doing to stop the effects of climate change?"

"Well, we don't drive everywhere, we walk and bike and we don't produce as much pollution, we try and save our energy."

And if you want to tell us what you think about climate change - you can e-mail us on cbbcnewsround@bbc.co.uk.

More news now and an Iranian court is to decide whether to punish three young Americans who are charged with entering Iran illegally. Iranian officials say they were spying - but the American's families say the three friends - who were hiking in neighbouring Iraq - wandered into Iran accidentally.

Next up - there's more bad news for star golfer Tiger Woods. Within days of announcing that he's taking a break from the game because of family problems - he's been dropped by one of his sponsors - Accenture. They say that he's no longer the right person to represent them. The shaving company - Gilette - also say they will limit the amount they use Tiger to front their advertising campaigns.

Some footy news now and Liverpool suffered their sixth defeat of the season after they were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal. It was this second half goal from Andrei Arshavin that sealed it......

CLIP: "Arshavin with a shot, high end of the net, Arshavin scores again at Anfield...and Arsenal have come from 1-0 down to lead 2-1"

It moves Arsenal up to third position in the Premier League - Manager - Arsene Wenger  - says Arsenal's bid for the title is back on....

CLIP: "After the Chelsea game, nobody expected us to be as close as we are now, we are six points behind Chelsea. So in such a short period of time, even I didn't expect that"

More sports news now and the fastest man in the world - Usain Bolt - has won the BBC award for overseas Sports Personality of the Year. It's the second year in a row that Bolt has taken the prize. The Jamaican set new world records this year in both the 100m and 200m at the World Championships in Berlin.

And today's question is all about Bolt's world record - we want to know what time he completed the 100 metre race in?

In the UK - it was Manchester United player Ryan Giggs that won the award, with F1 star Jenson Button coming second. Giggs has won more medals than any other British footballer. The player - who has spent his whole club career with the reds - thanked Manager Alex Ferguson for all he has done for his career.........

CLIP: "He's been a father figure to me since I was thirteen, fourteen, and he is one of the main reasons why I've been so successful"

And finally - we all know that the world of politics can be a tough one - but the Italian Prime Minister got more than he bargained for when he was hit in the face at a political rally. Silvio Berlusconi has spent the night in hospital after his nose was broken, and two of his teeth were knocked out. Mr Berlusconi, who is seventy-three-years old, was signing autographs when a man hurled a tourists' souvenir at him. The attacker has been found and has been charged by the police.

OK, that's all from the World News for Children Team. We're back with more top stories tomorrow.
