Script to introduce the film

In this BBC School Report film reporters from Paddington Academy in Westminster, UK meet Dima a 10 year-old maths prodigy.

Dima, who spoke no English when he moved from Ukraine to the UK just three-and-a-half years ago, has now taken over the role of maths teacher for younger pupils of the school during lunch breaks.

Dima's fellow students at Edward Wilson Primary School say that they are impressed by his lesson and his teachers are more than happy to have him helping out.

Show the film and use the discussion prompts afterwards. Email worldclass@bbc.co.uk if you would like to download a copy of this film.

Can you answer Dima's question? What is 466 x 87? (The answer is 40542)

In the film Dima says: "Maths is just another language." Do you agree with this statement? Why, why not?

How would you feel if you were Dima's teacher or one of his classmates?

How would you feel about being taught by someone who was the same age as you?

Are there any unusual lessons in your school? What are they and why are they unusual?

Do you think gifted students should be encouraged to teach their classmates? Why?

If you could teach any subject to your classmates what would it be? Why would you choose this?
